We walked down the hall to the exit to the landing pad, where people with flying cars would land. Even now, as I step out into the crisp air and look out over the cityscape in front of me, I can see hundreds of these cars flying about. But looking up at the clear blue skies above I already knew I was on tier three of all places. A place I once dreamed about was now right in front of me.
“Do you plan to bring him with us?” the woman asked. Causing me to look at the man still in my grip who was now foaming at the mouth. I frowned slightly as I saw his drool getting close to my hand and tossed him aside.
“Why did you save me?” I asked as I walked to the rather long car. I think this was what they called a limo.
“Because you are our future.” the woman replied with a smile. “Get in we will talk along the way.”
I hesitated for a moment before realizing this was my only choice. If I stayed, I had no way of getting down besides jumping, and to be honest, I have no idea if I could even survive the fall. Probably not. I don’t want to test it either. Lizard pancake does not sound too good.
I grabbed my tail and curled it around my waist so I could sit in the seat, although I still had to sit forward a bit. However, this was a bit uncomfortable for me. I mean who makes seats that can’t even accommodate a lizard girl? Or was it a dragon girl? I don’t remember. I will need to ask this woman, who seems to have an understanding of what I am, a few questions.
“Now then,” the woman begins. “My name is Nina Vane. I am the CEO of Blaze Enterprises and also in charge of overseeing the players. The place you were just at is an organization built by the nobles whose aim is to try to steal or somehow create a system for their own personal use since only specific people will see a fairy and gain a system.”
“Fairy? What’s that? I do remember seeing a flying cockroach before passing out. It disappeared though. I wonder if it died trying to poke at a light.” I scratched my head. If I see that flying cockroach again I plan to squash it good.
“Hehe.” Nina chuckles and smiles at me. “Out of all the people who had gained a system, only a few come from the first tier. You see, these flying cockroaches, as you call them, are part of a world boundary that you are unable to access directly unless you have a system. We have what we call boundary tears that appear all over the city. From them, viruses appear, and only those with systems are able to kill a virus. Believe it or not, we have been fighting these viruses since humankind fell during the last major war.”
“Okay… sooo… you want me to fight these so-called viruses? Why would I do that for people who have not even treated those on the first tier as human beings?” I asked with a snort. I really was starting to dislike the people of the third tier more and more.
“First, by killing viruses, you grow stronger, and if you are lucky, you will also be able to enter the boundary where many rewards await. Second, you will get to stay here in a residence for free, with everything paid for, including food and all utilities. Your clothes and everything will be completely paid for. Of course, things that are not necessary will need to be paid for out of your salary. Which comes to number three. You will be given a hefty salary. After all, you are putting your life on the line to protect the people of this city.” Nina explains, and I couldn’t help but suck in the drool running down my chin. She had me at free food.
“Wait, by food, you don’t mean trash bags, right?” I had to make sure this was real food. Something I never had before and only dreamt about.
“Excuse me?” Nina looked at me in confusion.
“I mean, you won’t just be picking up some random trash bags that might or might not have food in it as a food, right? While it is fun to always guess what you are going to get if the food is sour, it will make you sick. Heaven knows how many times I had to stick my butt over the edge of the building and just let it all come out.” Just thinking about it made me have flashbacks. My stomach hurt so badly those few times that I thought I was going to die.
“Umm… have you been rummaging through the garbage all this time?” Nina asks looking at me with a strange expression. Why do I feel offended? That look that says, poor girl. Can I hit her? Will I lose my real food if I hit her? I purse my lips and decide against it. Real food was important. If she is lying I will hit her then.
“Isn’t that what you all do? Every day you all send your trash down to use and hand out bags of trash to those who come. It’s really hit or miss if you get any food.” I explained. I have no idea why she is so confused.
“No, that is impossible. The government is supposed to supply aid to Tier 1. I have kept a monthly donation going since I took over the company to ensure money is flowing into Tier 1.” Nina looks quite angry.
“Um… Since I was orphaned this is just how it went. Never mind jobs or anything else food is mainly just rats, cockroaches, and mystery trash bags. I am not sure about the money since tier 1 has basically nothing.” This lady really did make a lot of different faces. I was only telling the truth. If there was money flowing into tier 1 it must have been used on something else besides the people. The higher tiers never gave two shits about tier one people.
