Earth, Eastern Maine Medical…

A young girl ran down the hall. Her head was covered in a small pink beanie. The nurse who saw her only smiled at her and stepped out of the way. “Kali, I’m here~!”

“Renni, you shouldn’t run!” Kali, who was lying on the bed, sighed when she saw the girl breathing heavily. 

“Hehe. I just couldn’t wait to see you.” Renni’s cheeks turned red. She had come to meet Kali through a nurse who wanted to help her make a friend. The two girls quickly hit it off and became friends. Even though there was a few-year difference in their ages, it did not matter. 

“I know, but you are also sick. What if you get too sick to come see me.” Kali sighed. If she could, she would get out of bed and go see Rennie herself, but she was unable to even move on her own.

“It’s fine. Eventually, I will die. I am just happy to have met Kali.” Renni replied, her cheeks turning red. She had been friends with Kali for a month now, and during this month, due to Kali’s kindness and putting up with her selfishness, she had begun to like Kali as more than just a friend. She had fallen in love with the girl. But since she was going to die, she did not dare say the words out loud. She did not wish to hurt Kali more when she passed on. She was content with the current situation where she could spend her time with her first and only friend. She, too, has lived in the hospital since a young age. Normally, she was confined to her room, but because her tests had become worse and worse, any time she felt well, she was allowed to come and visit Kali.

“We will all die, but there is still a chance for you.” Kali reached out with her hand and placed it on the girl’s head. “You can still win the fight. Do not give up.”

    “It’s okay. I already know.” Renni smiled as she took Kali’s hand in hers and placed it on her cheek. “As long as I can spend my final days with you, I am happy.”

Kali let out another sigh and did her best to make some room on the bed. “Come up and rest with me for a while.”

“Can I stay here tonight? The nurse said I could if you said yes.” Renni asked. 

“Of course. We can watch a movie tonight. Maybe my nurse will be kind enough to get us some chips as well.” Kali poked Renni’s side and grinned. The two girls giggled and cuddled up next to each other. 

To Kali, Renni gave her a warm feeling. It brightened her normally lonely day. She couldn’t even move out of the bed without the assistance of another. Only on the weekends, when her parents showed up, could she get outside. But she also knew these times were coming to an end herself. Like Renni, she was also terminally ill.

“Chips!” Renni yelled out. She couldn’t eat chips all that often, so if they could get some, it would be a big treat. “I wish we could get ice cream….”

“Let’s ask for that too.” Kali leaned her head against Renni’s as they watched the show on TV. Renni was an innocent girl. She did not know much about the outside world or other things. She barely knew how to read. So, anytime she came over, they watched things more on a child’s level of intelligence. But Kali did not mind this at all. She liked spending her time with Renni. 

“Our song is on!” Renni Cheered as she began singing.

“When we are together. We are strong….

“When I am with you, I feel like I can go on…

“You are the one. You are the only one.

“Who can stay by my side….

“So do not cry.

“So do not cry for meee…

“I am…. Here and will stay by your side.”

As Kali sang along with her, the nurses who walked by all smiled warmly at the scene of the two girls. It was not easy being terminally ill. It was one of the hardest things for these nurses to deal with. They try not to become too attached to their patients. But for these two girls, most of the nurses, all watched out for them. It broke their hearts to know that they would soon die, but they also wished that these girls would get better and live normal lives. The nurses all felt happy and sad to know these girls had such strong bonds.

“Cough…” Renni began to cough, which caused Kali to panic and hit the button for the nurse. 

“Renni! Are you okay!?” Kali asked. She was scared that something was wrong.

“I’m fine… I just sang a little too hard just now.” Renni smiled brightly at Kali as a nurse rushed over and took her pulse.

“She is fine.” The nurse said with a smile before teasingly saying “You are always so quick to hit that button, Kali. You must really cherish Renni.”

“Of course! Renni is my sunshine.” Kali’s words made Renni blush from ear to ear. Renni wondered if Kali realized her words were like bombs going off in her heart, making her fall more and more for her each time.
