Chapter 4

“You! You actually just toss your mother aside!? You ungrateful child! Since you can stand, come help!” Some old lady came over and started yelling at Angelica, who just turned and looked at her blankly for a second before saying: “No.” She had seen this old lady walk right by her not too long ago, why would she listen to her? As for the girl’s mother, she would deal with it somehow.

“Did… Did you just tell me no!? You little brat, how dare you say no!” The old lady raised her hand and was about to slap Angelica, but Angelica did not plan to just stand there and take it. So she dodged the slap, picked up the arrow she had ripped out of her chest, and pointed it at the old lady. “You! What are you planning!?”

“Just defending myself. Where do I live? I will deal with my mother. After all, everyone is too busy to care about wounded people who can be saved.” Angelica did not like to talk much outside her own interest, so speaking this many words to some old lady was already giving her a headache.

“Where do you live!? At the old hut at the back of the village, the only one at the end of the road…” The old lady did not dare say any more than that. She looked at the child, whose expression was blank, in confusion. She didn’t understand why the child suddenly asked where she lived.

Angelica ignored the old lady and began tugging on the woman on the ground until she finally propped the woman’s body up on her shoulder and began walking. She found the little girl’s body, while skinny, seemed quite strong. She did not feel burdened at all by the girl’s mother’s body. She trudged along step after step, dragging the body with her as she made her way to the back of the village.

She had not planned to care about the body, but since it was the mother of this body, then she would deal with it, whether it was burying it or burning it. Angelica also knew she needed to be more on guard. It did not seem as if this village was as close as it seemed. They were fighting together, but as soon as someone got hurt, they were left behind and ignored. Even the old lady who yelled at her wanted to hit her right away without even thinking: “Maybe the child was still stunned by her mother being killed.”

“Humanity can be selfish sometimes.” Angelica sighed. She did not know how it was outside this village, and she knew little to nothing about this world except that it was very low level in terms of technology, at least from what she could see anyway.

Angelica finally reached the last house in the village. She moved the body on her back to the backyard, further away from the hut, and laid the woman down on her stomach. “I will at least clean you up.”

She began pulling the arrows from the woman’s back and tossing them to the side. She would keep them in case she needed them. She didn’t know when she might need to defend herself. After she pulled the arrows out, she rolled the woman over and put her hands on top of each other across her chest. The woman’s face was very pale and sunken in. Angelica could tell at first glance the woman was sick. Even her fingernails had turned black. “Well, if there is a heaven, maybe you and your daughter are still together.”

Angelica looked around the backyard a bit and spotted just what she needed. Since she did not want to start a fire and burn down her hut, she could only bury the mother. She felt her body was unusually strong, so she did not think it would be too much of an issue to dig a six-foot hole. It was just… “Why is everything so troublesome?”

She had just come to this world, and the first thing she did was pull an arrow from her chest, get yelled at, and almost hit by some random old lady, and now here she was digging a grave. But all of this did make her wonder how her mother was going to deal with her death. Her mother really loved her.

As she began digging the hole, Angelica did not notice the tears rolling down her cheeks. She just stared blankly at the ground as she shoveled scoop after scoop of dirt. She already knew there was no way she could go back any time soon, especially if the technology of this world was not advanced. She didn’t even know if her current body could survive on Earth. The bacteria in the air might kill her instantly. She had no idea if this body makeup was the same as those on Earth. She had so many questions but not a single answer.

About an hour later, Angelica had not only dug the hole but also found new clothes for herself and the woman. Even a large vase as tall as her of water was in what she presumed to be the kitchen. She wiped the woman down and gently placed her into the hole she dug before climbing out and filling it in. Only when she was done did she make a makeshift marker and bow her head to say a few words. “I didn’t know you… I didn’t know the little girl whose body I have taken over. I don’t know anything about this world and almost left you in the street. But I hope wherever you are now, you are with the daughter who has also passed away. And sorry… It seems I will be borrowing the girl's body for a while.”

After she was done, Angelica walked back towards the house in hopes of finding out more about this world.
