Hunting
Sora left the house with Leena holding her hand. It was as if he was afraid that if he let go, she would disappear on him like Ai did. He knew he was overreacting, but the scene of his sister being smashed on the ground by those human traffickers still lingered in his mind. Leena, on the other hand, was smiling away. She had not gone for a stroll with her brother in a long time, so right now, she was very happy.
It took almost an hour to walk from the village to the forest edge. But once he got there, Sora was unsure of what he should be doing next. Other than trying to hunt something down, he knew nothing about the plants in this place. “Leena, do you know which plants are edible or not?”
“Mm! I sure do! I had to come here while you were sick. You had taught me which plants were which. I will help you remember which plants are useful.” Leena’s eyes lit up as she pulled away from Sora and ran over to what looked like a bunch of green weeds to Sora.
“This here is fransiceol. It is very good for making soup broth. But you have to be careful as the plant that grows near it looks just like it but has jagged edges on its leaves is poisonous and will give you diarrhea until you die.” Sora's eyes almost popped out of his head hearing this. This little girl was speaking of death as if it was nothing as she explained things. When he looked at the plants, he could not see the difference in them at all! They both looked the same!
While Sora was lost in thought, Leena continued: “But if you do accidentally eat the wrong plant, the fransiceol stem is the antidote, and if you eat them together, they will balance each other out and will actually help with digestion. So I always mix a bit in so that we do not have any bathroom issues.”
The more Leena explained, the more Sora realized that for her age, she was very knowledgeable in survival. With this thought in mind, he decided to have Leena teach him everything she knew. “Leena, I will be counting on you then to remind me and reteach me the things I forgot.”
“Of course!” Leen was all smiles. She was happy she could help her brother out and help him regain his memories.
Sora found a thick branch as they walked, a sharp rock, and used it to shave away the tip of the branch to make a sharp point so he could try to hunt something down. Leena looked at him curiously as he worked before picking up a stick and rock of her own and copying his actions. “Brother, will these work?” Leena asked as she looked at her sharpened stick. She did not think such a crude weapon would help them kill anything.
“To be honest, I am not sure. We can only hope we run into a stupid animal that will allow us to stab it….” Sora was being realistic. Fish would swim around if you tossed a bit of bread in the water, even with you trying to stab it. But land animals were different. They could sense danger much better than any fish.
Leena couldn’t help but give her brother a strange look, but she did not say anything. She knew her brother was doing this for her even if he was not one hundred percent sure he could catch anything. Just knowing his good intentions was enough for her to know her brother still loved her dearly.
As the two made their way through the outer rim of the first. Leena was happily gathering and explaining each plant she picked up, all of which seemed to have a poisonous counterpart growing right next to it. It was not until an hour or so later that Sora finally spotted something in the bushes nearby. “Leena, shh.”
Sora pointed at the bush and motioned for her to get down. “Stay here. I will try to draw it out towards you. Once it sees you, it should try to turn back towards me. It's then that we will have a chance to attack it.”
Sora was hoping to use the animal's sense of danger against it to make it run back to where it last remembered was safe. If it worked, he would have just enough time to stab it with his wooden spear. Even if it did not fully impale his prey, it would wound it enough for him to hit it with a rock he had also prepared that he had hanging at his side.
Under Sora’s instructions, Leena nodded her head and watched as Sora slowly made his way around the area they heard the noise coming from. He slowly moved, trying to make as little noise as possible. His days on the streets really helped with this as he had to sneak away from many places after being chased.
The rustling got louder as Sora got closer, and he was finally able to see his prey. It was a brown furry little creature with long ears and a long horn sticking out of its head. He easily recognized it to be a rabbit type creature. But as soon as Sora got close, the horned rabbit instantly sensed him and took off running towards Leena. It was then that he made a very big mistake. “Shit!”
Sora knew that if this rabbit was cornered, it would definitely attack, and with its horn, it could easily kill Leena, who was small and had little to no meat on her bones. “ Damnit!” With no other choice, as soon as Sora jumped out of the bush, he raised the stick in his hand and went to toss it so that it would land in front of the horned rabbit, but before it even left his hand, a shadow suddenly came from over head, and a loud squeak was heard before the scent of blood filled the air.
Sora stumbled and fell back onto his butt. In front of him was a huge tiger type beast. It was white and had blue streaks that looked like lightning arcing off its body. “Wha… what is that!”
“Brother, run! It’s a rank one lightning tiger!” Leena yelled out. She was scared to death, but she knew her brother had lost his memories and was afraid he would not run away. But her yell attracted the attention of the lightning tiger!
